Irish American Heritage Center, 4626 N Knox Avenue, Chicago, IL

Karen and Patrick Cannady are presenting a Fiddle and Uilleann Pipes Demonstration and Performance as part of the Irish American Heritage Festival. The presentation will include an overview of how this pairing has influenced the sound of Irish Traditional music with demonstrations of techniques and styles in use today.

Karen (fiddle) and Patrick (uilleann pipes) play traditional music learned through years of study, absorbing a large and growing repertoire from Chicago’s community of Irish immigrant and Irish American musicians, from old tune collections, and from recordings old and new. They have traveled thousands of miles to learn from masters, and spent countless hours honing and refining their sound, both at home and in the rough-and-tumble Chicago session scene.

Inspired by immigrant musicians and given it a unique voice with tasteful arrangements on the pipes and fiddle. Their music is arresting, spare, unhurried, and rhythmic, using the full sonic palettes of both instruments and "lift" inherent in the melodies to great effect.

They are regular performers at Tionols (uilleann pipers' gatherings) around the USA. They have performed at the Great Northern Irish Pipers' Club Tionol in St. Paul, Minnesota, the Southern California Uilleann Pipers' Club Tionol in San Juan Capistrano, California, the Northeast Tionol in East Durham, New York and the St. Louis Tionol in St. Louis Missouri.

They have also performed at Irish festivals: Irish Fair in St. Paul, Minnesota, IrishFest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They performed every year at the late, lamented Chicago Celtic Fest at the Uilleann Piping Tionol Tent.

They are active in Chicago's own traditional music scene, playing for many years at sessions on both the North and South Sides of Chicago. They enjoy performing at local cafes as well.

On selected Saturdays, Patrick Cannady and his uilleann piping students and musical colleagues play tunes at the Irish American Heritage Center in the PIOBAIRI event.. In addition, they are sought after performers for weddings, house parties, and St. Patrick's Day events.
